This dynamic program of dance themes offers a vibrant journey through musical styles, cultures, and eras. It opens with a stirring setting of The Star-Spangled Banner by James Swearingen, followed by the lively Dance of the Jesters from Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s ballet repertoire. Ron Nelson’s Courtly Airs and Dances transports the audience to Renaissance Europe with elegant and energetic movements inspired by historical dance forms. The first half concludes with Robert Thurston’s spirited Festive Dances, led by the composer himself.
The second portion of the first half shifts to lighter fare, featuring the playful tango The Gliding Girl by John Philip Sousa and the nostalgic Rock, Roll and Remember, a tribute to Dick Clark and the golden age of rock and roll.
Following intermission, the program continues with selections from My Fair Lady by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe, showcasing timeless melodies from the beloved Broadway musical. Adam Gorb’s Eine Kleine Yiddish Ragmusik blends traditional Jewish musical elements with ragtime flair, while Julie Giroux’s Mambo Perro Loco brings infectious Latin rhythms to the stage. The high-energy Jitterbug by Robert Buckley and the exhilarating Russian Sailor’s Dance by Reinhold Glière bring the concert to a thrilling and spirited conclusion.
